Marques G. King, RA, NCARB, CNU.
Managing Principal of Fabric[K] Design
Architect, Urban Designer, Small Scale Developer
Fabric[K] Design strives to help people and organizations build better lifestyles through contextual, sustainable, & people-centric design. As a born & raised product of Detroit, Michigan, I was motivated to pursue a career in building things very early. The contradictions between ubiquitous stories of Detroit’s former glory contrast with the harsh realities that I grew up in inspired me to study the science of cities, and one day contribute to Detroit getting its ‘middle class swag’ back. For me as an architect, that means advocating for the more human-scaled, equitable and modernized versions of the building types, streets, neighborhoods, entrepreneurs, and businesses that built that middle class more than a century ago.
I received my B.A in Architecture and in Construction Management from Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan in 2010. From there I went on to receive my Master of Architecture from the University of Maryland in 2014. Over the years I have had the great fortune to professionally work at every scale of the built environment and to do so domestically and internationally. At the trades-person level I’ve held positions in a cabinet making shop, structural steel foundry, and as an electrician’s apprentice. As an architect, I’ve designed projects as small as residential roof repairs to 50+ unit mixed use apartment buildings with multi-million dollar budgets. As an urban designer, the teams I have worked with have produced award winning, published, and codified masterplans for cities like Atlanta, Georgia, Savannah, Georgia and Nanjing, China. This intimate understanding of the built-environment at every scale is present in every project. It is a critical part in making sure that no building or any other urban component operates in isolation but as an important piece to a much more elaborate neighborhood system.
My varied experience has allowed me to refine my architectural and development focus toward projects that directly affect the health and wealth of local & regional communities. This is the genesis of Fabric[K]. And although I continue to work all over the country, Fabric[K] Design’s home base of Detroit, Michigan affords it the opportunities to make local changes right here in my hometown.

MY INTERESTS
Languages have been one of my personal obsessions since I began teaching myself Italian back in 2010. Since then I’ve added Spanish to my training. I’ve intensified my Latin language practice since I can’t travel like I want to lately. I take lessons using Fluenz Language Learning Software which I prefer over the other and has several languages to choose from. Check it out the links below.
I’ve also been practicing my Yoga daily at home since I can go to the studio. I’ll do my own practice or join online with either Live Cycle Delight Hot or Citizen Yoga here in Detroit. YogaByAdrienne is also my go to YouTube instructor.
